Global Health Internship in Oaxaca, Mexico
June 15 - July 27, 2024
Join Professor Roberto D. Hernández and local healthcare professionals to learn about primary care and preventative medicine, as well as community health education programs. Rotate at community level clinics and hospitals serving low-income populations. See Mexico's three-tiered insurance system, and observe how the quality of care, wait times, and access to medications varies between each. Explore the country's demographic and epidemiological transitions as chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension are increasingly common. This program will provide participants with unique insight and cultural competency when serving the growing Mexican immigrant population in the US and abroad.
In addition to internship rotations, students will have weekly course sessions with Professor Hernández, and lectures by local healthcare professionals.
Become immersed in Mexican culture and language through Spanish classes and living with a local family in Oaxaca. In the city of Oaxaca, go shopping, explore museums and art galleries, or hang out with locals in the vibrant Zócalo or main plaza. Participants may also organize weekend trips to nearby destinations such as the Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán.
This experience is geared toward those with an interest in social work, public health, nursing, or related fields.
